January 18, 2014 ESL Training Session

INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGUE (ESL) TUTOR?

Our next tutor training session is scheduled for January 2014

To get started, we ask our tutors to complete a 10-hour tutor training. These sessions are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Plymouth UCC Congregational Church, 115 West Merrimac in Dodgeville. The principal trainer is Kathy Warpinski, a retired Dodgeville High School Spanish teacher, who started her career as a volunteer, teaching English to farm workers in a California church hall. Some of our current tutors will also be on hand to share their experiences.

You are welcome to come to the first session to find out more and will be under no obligation to commit to tutoring until after the second session. We are also requesting that you contribute $20 to pay for the training manual if you are able. However, we do not want to turn any volunteers away so please don’t hesitate to let us know if this is a problem and we will provide the materials.

Do these dates work for you? Please let us know if you are interested or if you have other questions about ESL tutoring. Contact Shirley Barnes at [email protected] or 608-623-2109. Include your name, address, email address and telephone number please.

Following the training, you will be assigned to a student whom you will meet weekly one-on-one at a mutually agreeably time and location, often in the students’ homes. We have students from Mexico, Columbia, Peru, Russia and a number of other countries. You do not need to know a foreign language. In the training session, you’ll learn how to overcome the language barriers with your student.

Also please let us know if you know of other people who are interested in learning more about ESL tutoring. We are particular looking for tutors in the Darlington/Belmont area and in the Fennimore/Montfort area.

Our ESL program is jointly sponsored by Grassroots Citizens of Wisconsin, the Community Connections Free Clinic, the Iowa County Literacy council and Plymouth Congregational Church.
