October 15, 2011 Grassroots Annual Event - Feingold to Speak
MINERAL POINT - Russ Feingold to make a rare public appearance!
Former U.S. Senator Russ Feingold will be the guest speaker for the Grassroots Citizens of Wisconsin (GCW) annual fall event, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Feingold will speak at 7 p.m. This free event, which is open to the public, will be held at the Studio, 103 Commerce Street in Mineral Point. The event, scheduled for the weekend of the Fall Art Tour, will include wine, cheese and good conversation.
Feingold, who rarely makes public appearances these days, particularly in southwest Wisconsin, will be talking about “The Exploding Corporate Influence in Washington.”
Grassroots is a non-partisan group that fosters political dialogue and involvement throughout southwest Wisconsin. Attendees will have a change to find out more about what the organization is up to these days and how they can get involved in its community-changing work. Among the progressive topics currently on the Grassroots agenda are protecting health care reform, immigration reform, peace and justice issues, and sustaining the environment.
As his second act, Feingold, too, has become a champion of progressive causes. His newly formed organization, Progressives United (www.progressivesunited.org), was started to combat corporate influence in politics and to spark “a new progressive movement” to hold elected officials accountable to the public.
Looks like Wisconsin Democrat Russ Feingold has found his second act. The former Senator has started an organization to combat corporate influence in politics in a move he hopes will spark “a new progressive movement” to hold elected officials accountable to the people.
The organization, called Progressives United, hopes to build a grassroots movement to push back against the effects of the Citizens United decision. While the ultimate goal is reversal of the decision, Progressives United will also support progressive candidates at the local, state and national levels.
Elected officials are not the only ones that Feingold has his sights on. The PAC will also hold the media to task for its role in failing to report on the group’s main priorities.
According to Feingold, Progressives United will follow the lead of his own campaigns and not take any soft money or unlimited contributions. Full transparency is the standard the group will live by. In that sense it will be far different that the host of other 527 groups that have sprouted up as a result of Citizens United, many of which fail to disclose contributions or hide behind anonymous donors.
Feingold and Progressives United are a much needed antidote to the current crop of business-centric interests on both sides of the aisle. It may be that the only way to really fight back is to meet these interests on their own turf. This is a bold move by Feingold and may just be what the progressive movement needs right now.
