MINERAL POINT, Los Vientos de Marzo (The Winds of March)

At Mineral Point's wonderful outdoor Alley Stage, award-winning poet Lynn Werner performs an original solo theater piece with music, dance, poetry and prose based on her eight years documenting human rights abuses in Colombia until she fled in the early 90's. She leads the audience through sugarcane fields to hear the voices of corteros, the flight of displaced rural peasants as they flee to urban misery only to have their shacks bulldozed by the military, the voices of Afro-Colombia women in villages of the Pacific Coast of Colombia herded onto cattle cars to work in the fields of Cauca, the testimony of torture of the Coordinator of the Committee for the Rights of Political Prisoners who is raped as a form of military intimidation. She also weaves in her own personal story of intimidation including her own rape, death threats, and detention by the military. Her production includes the actual voices of torture she managed to smuggle into the US on an audio cassette. Los Vientos de Marzo has been given a various human rights conferences, universities, and for Laborfest at the Exit Theater in San Francisco which produces experimental work. Lynn Werner recently relocated to a home in the country just outside of Galena.
