PUBLIC HEARING
Senate Select Committee on Mining Jobs
The committee will hold a public hearing on the following items at the time specified below:
UW-Platteville
Ullsvik Hall, Harry and Laura Nohr Gallery
1 University Plaza
Platteville, WI
LRB 4035/P1 (Senate Mining Bill) Relating to: regulation of ferrous metallic mining and related activities, procedures for obtaining approvals from the Department of Natural Resources for the construction of utility facilities, making an appropriation, and providing penalties.
Assembly Bill 426 Relating to: regulation of ferrous metallic mining and related activities, making an appropriation, and providing penalties.
By Committee on Jobs, Economy and Small Business. The committee will accept testimony on both bills concurrently. Testimony may be limited to three (3) minutes per person, at the discretion of the Chair. Copies of any un-introduced legislation listed above are available at the Senate Chief Clerk's office, or on the Web page of the Senate Select Committee on Mining Jobs, located at: www.senatorkedzie.com
Significance: Gogebic Taconite an out-of-state mining company has been seeking changes to Wisconsin's mining laws. Both AB 426 and the Senate Bill LRB 4035 drastically weaken environmental protections, public health protections, and the public's voice. AB 426 was voted out of the Assembly and awaits Senate approval.
Senator Dale Schultz sits on the Senate Committee that is holding this hearing. Sen. Schultz is not pleased with AB 426 and wants to make a better bill. LRB 4035 has many of the same problems as AB 426, and we need citizens to let Sen. Schultz know that at the public hearing. Additional information on the bills and the hearing can be found at www.conservationvoters.org or by calling 608-661-0845.
