January 15, 2012 Mitchell to speak on rights at MLKing event

SPRING GREEN, Mahlon Mitchell, who at age 33 in 2011 was named the first African American president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin (PFFW), will be the guest speaker at the annual River Valley observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, January 15, in the library of Spring Green Elementary School, 830 W. Daley Street.

The title of Mitchell’s Spring Green speech is “Union Rights are Human Rights.” He was a prominent leader and speaker at rallies during massive demonstrations last year at the state capitol to protest Gov. Walker’s budget bill, which effectively did away with collective bargaining rights for public employees.

During recent months, Mitchell has been mentioned as a potential candidate for governor to oppose Walker in a recall election.

Mitchell has been a firefighter for more than 13 years in Madison and was promoted to lieutenant of the department. He was born in Milwaukee and lived in Chicago before moving to Delavan where he attended high school.

The Martin Luther King Jr. birthday observance in the River Valley will include birthday cake, and is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to cover expenses. An ad hoc group of River Valley residents coordinates the event. Last year’s speaker was Matt Rothschild, editor of The Progressive Magazine. For information, call David Giffey at 574-2198.
